Young Friends gathered last week for a day of conversation and workshops to explore how today’s economy works.  The ‘Young Quakers: New Economy Now’ event was held on 30 June at Friends House and asked: ‘Who’s the economy for?’ ‘What’s wrong with today’s system?’ and ‘How can we create a new economy now?’

Speakers included: Andy Haldane, Bank of England;  Fran Boait, Positive Money; Joe Earle, Rethinking Economics; and Hazel Sheffield, Far Nearer Project.

Sue Newsom, from North London Area Meeting and convenor of the planning group, told the Friend: ‘The whole process has been very spiritually-led since very clear guidance came to me during Yearly Meeting in Warwick 2017.

‘When I met with Young Friends it was clear to me that their perspective was much wider than banking reform. They also wanted to look at good energy, food justice and housing justice.’

The event was organised by Young Friends and London Quakers Steering Group, with expenses supported by a Quaker Peace & Social Witness grant.
