World Quaker Day

The first World Quaker Day will take place on 5 October

The first World Quaker Day will take place on 5 October, the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) has announced.

FWCC is inviting every Quaker Meeting and Church, wherever in the world, to celebrate the day. The hope is that World Quaker Day will promote unity amongst Friends.

‘As the sun rises in each area of the world, we want to remember that Quakers are worshiping through every time zone, celebrating our deep connections across cultures and Quaker traditions,’ the Committee said in a statement.

The theme of the event is Let Your Life Speak: Living the Kabarak Call for Peace and Ecojustice. FWCC hopes it will connect Quakers to the work done at the World Conference of Friends in 2012 in Kenya.

‘World Quaker Day was inspired by various events that take place at more local levels around the world, including Quaker Week in Britain,’ FWCC international membership secretary Harry Albright told the Friend.

‘The Central Executive Committee of FWCC discerned that a global event could build on these other initiatives, expanding upon them and uniting Friends across cultures, theological practices and traditions.’

‘The idea of using a particular day to build on regional events came from a Friend, Norval Reece of Newtown Meeting in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (US),’ FWCC general secretary Gretchen Castle explained.

‘World Quaker Day will be an annual event, and we will build on this year’s day as we plan for 4 October 2015,’ Harry said.
