A post-Meeting conversation has inspired Worcester Friends to help tackle the lack of feminine hygiene products in developing countries.

Sharon Multani-Colebrook, founder of local charity FEMpads, attended Meeting recently. She told Friends about her charity, which makes reusable sanitary towels for women who cannot afford them. In the case of younger women, the lack of feminine hygiene products can mean they miss a week of school each month.

As a result of Sharon’s visit, a workshop is now held at Worcester Meeting House each month. Friends cut out, pin and sew the FEMpads, which are then sent to a range of countries, including Malawi, Uganda and the Congo.

Worcester Friends also hosted a discussion group where Sharon and two friends talked about what it means to be a Muslim woman in Worcester today, Quaker May Youett explained.

‘Both of these events are proving to be a valuable way of reaching out and building community in Worcester,’ May told the Friend.
