Winchester Quaker artist in Heritage Day
'In his art he was always aiming to portray truth – the truth of the way things are, and the truth of what a development in the city might really look like.'
Winchester Friends hosted a retrospective of the artwork of Quaker artist Andrew Rutter as part of its Heritage Day activities. Maggie Allder, clerk of Winchester Meeting, told the Friend: ‘Over two days [18 and 19 September] we saw over 240 visitors, served refreshments, showed off the architecture of our building, and enjoyed many interesting conversations.’
Of the ‘much loved’ Meeting member Andrew Rutter, she said: ‘He once told me that in his art he was always aiming to portray truth – the truth of the way things are, and the truth of what a development in the city might really look like. Andrew also designs and draws thought-provoking posters to put outside our Meeting house.’
Andrew Rutter is well known locally, partly for his iconic pictures of Winchester.
