Whither Next?
Margaret Davis shares her poem, 'Whither Next?'
We train them to fire bullets that we have sold them
And wonder why they kill the rioting crowd.
We are amazed that they do not understand us,
Yet we do not attempt to understand them or even ourselves.
We learn to press buttons,
Then wonder why we no longer think.
We all want to go places,
And wonder why we are always in a traffic jam.
We want to travel the world,
Yet put up at swish hotels and lie on the beach.
We export our polluted waste,
And wonder why ‘people’s’ life expectancy is so short where ‘they’ sort it.
We junk our mobiles, tellies and ‘fridges to buy new.
And wonder where to dump the mess.
We buy things made cheaply abroad
And lose our treasured skills and jobs.
We cut down our own trees without replanting,
And send money to plant trees abroad.
We wonder what is missing in life
And cannot see we are holding ‘fool’s gold’.
We make so much noise
That we cannot hear the still, small voice.
‘They’ think we lead such ‘Rich’ lives,
Yet our prisons are filled with misery
Now
Do we stop to think what matters
Or go on ‘Dashing about’?
