Watford Friends have made a film remembering ‘those who defied the call to arms’ in the first world war.

Watford’s Quiet Heroes: Resisting the Great War is the work of Chris Pettit and Simon Colbeck. Chris filmed and directed the documentary, while Simon was responsible for writing, research and presenting. Both are members of Watford Meeting.

The documentary focuses on three conscientious objectors: Percy Leonard, Lionel Penrose (son of the Quaker artist James Doyle Penrose) and Howard Marten, who also features in the White Feather Diaries project.

The filmmakers hope that the documentary will prove a useful tool in secondary level education. Its content makes it suitable for a number of subjects, Simon told the Friend, including religious education, philosophy and ethics, history and politics.

The film’s 4 October premiere will be followed by a panel discussion with the producer and some of those featured in the film, including author David Boulton and Owen Everett, a member of Watford Meeting who works for the charity ForcesWatch.
