The Fair Penny Campaign gets media coverage

by Ian Kirk-Smith 18th April 2014

Friends in Wanstead are in the news with their campaign that urges people to pay an extra penny per pound in tax to protect the most vulnerable from the effects of austerity cuts.

The latest media coverage of their initiative, in the Redbridge Guardian, highlighted how getting a public profile can assist with outreach.

Kate Green, of Wanstead Meeting, told the Friend: ‘Interestingly, the local reporter I first spoke with had never heard of Quakers, except as a brand name, and did not know there were Quakers in Wanstead with a Meeting house.’

The internet petition launched by Friends in Wanstead – The Fair Penny Campaign – has been signed by more than one thousand people.

Wanstead Quakers state: ‘As human beings, we are all responsible for social justice. We can each do our part to create a society in which every child has a chance to fulfil their potential, the sick are cared for and the unemployed helped into work. All that costs money, and many of us feel that we’d prefer to pay more, rather than less, in order to achieve this.’

The story, Kate explained, ‘appeared in the Redbridge Guardian. It also appears on their website: http://bit.ly/FairPenny.’
