Volunteers at the Quaker Tapestry Museum have chosen tapestry panels for the museum’s 2017 calendar and offered personal responses to their favourite ones.

Museum manager Bridget Guest explained that the museum relies on its helpers. Up to forty volunteers offer service each year, sharing the stories of the panels with visitors. The volunteers were asked to choose twelve panels – out of seventy-seven – for the calendar. Each volunteer was also asked to provide a personal insight into why a particular panel inspired him or her.

Bridget said: ‘Retired industrial chemist Adrian Law said his choice was an obvious one – a tapestry about scientists. Social worker Penny Selbie describes the panel about oaths as being relevant to her court experience. Mary Meeks says she is fascinated by the embroidery of Mary Fisher, a serving girl from Yorkshire who travelled to Turkey in 1657 to speak to the Sultan.

‘For holistic homoeopathic practitioner Carol Wise the panel highlighting the Quaker contribution to the medical profession is her favourite.’

Bridget concluded: ‘The result is a selection of twelve diverse panels and twelve fascinating stories.’
