Visiting the Arboretum – a personal experience

Helen Lockwood walks through the National Arboretum

It was VJ Day in August 2008 and we arrived to see many British Legion members in uniform. Some had banners. Even David Cameron was there! My first response was: ‘I do not want to be here’ – and we nearly left there and then, but we stayed. Thank goodness we did.  I had first heard about the National Arboretum at Staffordshire Area Meeting when suggestions were made for a Quaker Memorial, dedicated to the Friends Ambulance Unit and Friends Relief Service, to be there. That late summer morning my husband, Bill, and I continued to look around and then we spent the whole day there.
