United States tour for CO play
A play by a Quaker playwright from Wanstead Meeting is touring the United States
A Quaker playwright from Wanstead Meeting, Michael Mears, is to show his play This Evil Thing in Buffalo this week as part of a five-week tour of the United States. The one-man play, which was stage-designed by Winchmore Hill Quaker Mark Friend, is about Britain’s first world war conscientious objectors.
The play is partly inspired by a real conscientious objector, Bert Brocklesbry, whose memoir Michael Mears read at Friends House’s library. He told the Friend: ‘The US tour is proving fascinating. I think four of the seventeen venues have Quaker connections of some kind.
‘This weekend’s show, which is presented by Buffalo Quaker Meeting in collaboration with the Centre on Conscience and War and Conscience Studio, will be at the Buffalo History Museum on 8 April. Other tour destinations include Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York, Philadelphia, Virginia, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. The tour ends on 21 April.’
