Trident opposed in The Times
Quakers join other faith groups in calling for Trident to be cancelled
Quakers have joined with other faith communities in calling on the government to cancel the replacement of Trident.
Juliet Prager, deputy recording clerk of Quakers in Britain, was among the signatories of a letter to The Times arguing that the abolition of nuclear weapons ‘would be a significant contribution to a safer world’.
‘It is unacceptable that British citizens should be persuaded that their security depends on a credible threat to kill millions of innocent people. Our faith traditions reject the notion that reliance on the threat of mass destruction could ever be right,’ they wrote.
Stressing that the UK’s security does not exist in a vacuum, the signatories urged the government to take the lead in ‘current global initiatives which aim to create a nuclear-weapon free world’.
The group also called for the £100 billion ring-fenced for Trident to be spent on ‘combating poverty at home and overseas; in providing affordable homes; investing in education and the NHS’.
Other faith groups represented among the signatories included the Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist churches, the Church of Scotland and the United Reformed Church.
