Trident briefing for Scottish Friends
A short guide has been prepared for Quakers in Scotland on Trident and the general election 2015
A short guide for Quakers in Scotland on Trident and the general election 2015 has been prepared by Britain Yearly Meeting.
The new document is supplementary to the larger General election 2015: a guide for Quakers briefing published earlier this year, Mairi Campbell-Jack, Scottish parliamentary engagement officer for Britain Yearly Meeting, explained to the Friend.
She added that its aim is to give Scottish Friends more information, about Trident specifically, around the election. Trident is expected to be a big issue in Scotland.
The briefing includes details of how MPs voted on the renewal of Trident in 2015, the main reasons to oppose its renewal and the potential implications of a hung parliament. It also provides suggested questions for Friends to ask their MPs. These include: ‘Do you believe that nuclear weapons can enhance our countries international relationships?’, ‘Do you think there could ever be a situation in which retaliation with nuclear weapons would be morally justifiable?’ and ‘If you could choose between spending £100bn on nuclear weapons or public services, which would you opt for?’
