Trade deals and transparency

Jude Kirton-Darling believes the present TTIP negotiations must be subject to transparency and rigorous, ongoing, public scrutiny

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is a series of trade negotiations being carried out, mostly in secret, between the EU and the US. TTIP was the subject of my Salter Lecture at Britain Yearly Meeting 2015.

For some, the title of the lecture – ‘Trade deals: realistic concerns or rabble-rousing?’ – might seem extreme. Indeed, the use of the word ‘rabble’ has been interpreted as provocative (‘The dangers of TTIP’ by David Maxwell, 17 July). It was certainly not intended to offend. The wording was prompted by personal experience.
