The silent protest against fracking held on Pendle Hill at the weekend prompted Quakers to organise other events earlier in April.

Friends in Totnes held a ‘Walk, Talk and Worship’ event on 10 April in support of the Pendle Hill witness and, after the walk, a visitor from East Lancashire described how fracking is affecting the countryside and communities in her area.

Amanda Woolley, of Totnes Meeting, said that local Friends were inspired to hear about the witness event and sent messages of support. She added that the previous day a group had climbed Brent Hill.

She said: ‘The shape of that hill and its 360 degree views over moor and sea are very reminiscent of Pendle Hill and reinforced the link that Totnes Quakers wanted to make. In celebrating our landscape and the land beneath our feet we appreciate how it resources us in so many ways. We feel how destructive fracking is wherever it is proposed.’
