Through European eyes

What is it like to be caught in the middle of a ‘quiet revolution’? Rosemary Rimmer-Clay gives an eyewitness account of recent events in Egypt.

We stared out of the hotel window as the Molotov cocktail bounced off the roof of Sangria, the restaurant complex across the road, bordering the Nile. Three days before, it had just been distant television reports about some unrest in Tunisia. Then, yesterday, there were bands of protesters openly walking down the Corniche into Tahrir square, chanting and peacefully waving placards. Today the demonstration had swollen into a crowd roaring like football supporters, a thronging march of protest that filled the road behind our hotel.
