Thought for the Week: Waiting

'Waiting' by Bob Ward

In our gathered Meeting
   silence behoves us, nobody moves.
Yet reflected by some water in a jug
   a chance light keeps on jiggling;
   a vibrancy affects this place.

Subtly then it comes to mind
that Gospel story how in Bethesda
a holy pool was thronged for the belief
an angel on occasion swirled calm water
so the first sick person to immerse
   themselves could hope for cure.

But one isolated cripple, prone,
was never able to compete at all
when sudden splashes caused a rush.
It needed a rare compassion
to discern his woeful plight and lend
him strength to walk his bed away
   while Jesus quietly slipped aside.

We here also wait, if as a group,
with water glimmering in our midst.
May such healing, too, be granted us.
