Thought for the Week: Piano

'Piano' by R V Bailey

Like having a piano in the house
We all need someone on whom to practise
Love. Arpeggios of passion, chords of content,

Persistent scales of care, with sharps or flats.
Not necessarily the great concerto
Of long-established wedded partnership –

Short practice pieces, over telephones,
To solitary friends; quick suburban trills
In shopping mall or high street;

Cadenzas in airmail envelopes
For dears Down Under.
But practise, practise. That’s the thing:

Beethoven sonatas can’t be achieved
In a week. Unpractised fingers of love
Won’t be sure or supple enough

When a concert performance is urgently needed
For child, father, friend, neighbour,
Stranger, enemy.
