Thirsk Friends launch ethics lectures
The talks through February and March will explore the ethics of: ‘money matters’; ‘artificial intelligence’; ‘a just war’; and ‘the problem of truth’.
Thirsk Meeting has started an evening lecture series on ethics aimed at attracting new attenders.
Geof Sewell, clerk of Thirsk Meeting, told the Friend: ‘Last Spring, problems that a Thirsk Friend had in articulating a concern led to a temporary drop in weekly attendance at Meeting for Worship. A long time admirer of Quakers, Peter Vardy sensed our disquiet and kindly offered to mount this lecture series.’
He added: ‘Peter has deep roots in the Anglican communion and among the Jesuits. He is also a retired professor of theology and a tireless school educator. He first visited our Local Meeting when Thirsk Churches were launching our Afghan refugee project and left us a… CAF voucher for £3,000 as a way of expressing his admiration for Quakers and the Salvation Army.’

Peter is a former vice-principal of Heythrop College, the specialist philosophy and theology college of the University of London. He has also served as an adviser for BBC and Channel 4 documentaries.
