The sun of friendship

Richard Thompson writes about the October retreat (Ouverture et Convivialité) at Congenies Meeting House in the South of France

The idea began in July. The resident warden, while we were plum picking in the garden, suggested a workshop on ‘Renewal and Fun’. I took it to the next Meeting. French Quakers are certainly not against fun. It’s the French language that is lacking. I liked the suggestion – conviviality. We really have to learn to live together on this planet despite our differences. Someone then looked up renouveau on the internet and found that it is the name of a new extreme right wing political party! Fortunately, the word ouverture – opening or openness – came to our help.
