The process of prophecy

Peter Bevan writes about his experience of Meeting for Sufferings

My current service with Meeting for Sufferings has seen a change in meeting venue, meeting size and (as the clerk of trustees pointed out on 28 March) a change in tone from mutual uncertainty to confident exploration between Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) trustees and Sufferings. There has been an attempt to move towards the prophetic role of Suffering and the management role of BYM trustees. To this end there have been attempts by the Sufferings Arrangements Committee to consider our agenda. Nowhere was this more apparent than in our meeting on 28 March, which included consideration of the abolition of torture, Islamophobia, asylum seekers and ways forward for future planning (to replace the long-term framework). Perhaps as a consequence of these changes some of the verbal contributions at Sufferings have had a higher emotional content. I am particularly aware that Sufferings has been challenged by several subjects.
