‘The Peace Testimony is a tough demand’

It is natural for Friends to find such events disturbing, and in similar cases I have heard remarks like: ‘I’ve been a pacifist for many years, but this time I do wonder whether force is the only way…’  I have never visited Nigeria but I have met many girls and boys who were abducted and abused in Uganda by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and similar groups. (If the Nigerian situation raises anger against Islam, we might recall that the LRA claimed to be Christian.) I was struck by these young people’s courage and resilience, though there were others who remained traumatised.
