How do you pray? When do you pray? Who do you pray to? These are questions I have never dared ask other Quakers, nor been asked, until I went to our local primary school to respond to questions from children aged ten and eleven.

Why are we so shy about the ‘P’ word? Is prayer such an intensely private, intimate activity? Is it our innate Anglo Saxon reserve? Many of us, I am sure, say or write to friends in need: ‘I will hold you in my thoughts and prayers’. Perhaps ‘I will hold you in the Light’ is really another way of saying ‘I will pray for you’?
