The NHS: protecting a universal service

Sylvia Melville writes about a concern recently taken up by Banbury and Evesham Area Meeting – to support the NHS Reinstatement Bill 2015

The NHS Reinstatement Bill 2015 seeks to reinstate the legal duty of the secretary of state to secure and provide a National Health Service in England. This Bill has the formal support of the British Medical Association (BMA).

The Bill was introduced to the House of Commons on 11 March 2015 by twelve MPs representing five political parties. The Bill, drafted by professor Allyson Pollock and barrister Peter Roderick, had made no formal progress by the end of the parliamentary session in March, but it is a serious piece of proposed legislation which prospective parliamentary candidates can be encouraged to support during the current election campaign. It will, also, be a marker after the election against which to test government proposals. With cross-party support it cannot be easily dismissed.
