Brian Kendall writes about migrant deaths in the Mediterranean

Last year more than 3,000 babies, children, women and men were drowned in the Mediterranean, having set out from North Africa in unseaworthy ships operated by pirates in a desperate effort to reach sanctuary in the European Union (EU).

Almost all the migrants were driven by wars, political brutality, religious persecution, ethnic violence, starvation, and also a wish for a secure, decent living standard within the rule of law.

There was little public knowledge or concern about the situation until the media began reporting, in a vivid way, on the vast numbers of innocent people who were dying.
