‘The Light’ shortlisted for architectural award
‘The Light’ has been shortlisted for a RIBA London 2015 award
The refurbished Large Meeting House in Friends House, which was rebranded for public bookings as ‘The Light’, has been shortlisted for a RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) London 2015 award.
John McAslan + Partners were the project architects for the £5 million renovation. Their work involved retaining key heritage features and adding a roof light. This lets light in from above for the first time since the 1950s, when the original windows were hidden by the construction of a ceiling.
Paul Parker, Britain Yearly Meeting recording clerk, said: ‘We’re delighted that Friends House is shortlisted for this prestigious award. We are indebted to the project architects for fulfilling our wish to create in The Light a space which reflects Quakers’ ethos of fairness and equality, a space which speaks about Quakers to the world’.
Sixty-eight buildings have been shortlisted for this year’s London awards. Among them are the Sam Wanamaker Theatre, King’s Cross Square and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Central Footbridge.
The winners will be announced on 18 May. The London winner will then be among regional winners considered for an RIBA National Award.
