The last taboo explored

Death and dying are the subject of a conference being sponsored by Quakers in Leeds

Quakers in Leeds are sponsoring a conference to explore ‘the last taboo’ – death and dying.  The gathering on 12 May will explore ‘all points of view’ on the issues, according to organiser Ben Francis. Speakers include Emily Jackson, an expert in medical law and Chris Larner, who accompanied his wife to Dignitas in Switzerland.

Discussion forums will cover topics including dementia, medical ethics and ‘preparing for your own death’.

Ben Francis told the Friend: ‘There does now seem to be an emerging view that this very contemporary topic, usually smothered in euphemism, needs to be debated’.

I do hope that there will be more on this - perhaps a write up in The Friend of the event?

I hope so too. After working in York Cemetery for 9 years in the 1990’s I feel no fear of death.I would encourage people to reclaim death and the rituals for sending someoneoff” from the ‘death industry’ (Cremetoria, Cemeteries, Funeral Directors). It’s so much more liberating for individuals and families when they do so.”
