The Large Meeting House: moving on

Penelope Cummins considers the imminent planned changes to the Large Meeting House and prompts Friends to reflect on decision-making in the Religious Society of Friends in Britain in the twenty-first century

Whatever else happens at Yearly Meeting this year, for some Friends Yearly Meeting 2013 will be remembered as ‘the last Yearly Meeting in the Large Meeting House as it used to be’. Perhaps, for many of those people it will be a moment of excitement; for a few of us, deep regret.  Yes, the Large Meeting House has become shabby. Yes, something had to be done. And, yes, there have been recent innovations in acoustic technology and in audio-visual technology, which, probably, should be creatively inserted into this unusual early twentieth century interior, so as to make the space more useful for Friends and for the organisations that hire the space.
