Friends of the Earth (FoE) has responded positively to the announcement by leading British supermarket Tesco that it will no longer provide single-use plastic bags – but wants the government to press for more. The campaigning charity is also urging the government and businesses to take similar action on disposable cups and plastic bottles.

Tesco recently announced that it will no longer issue single-use carrier bags and instead offer ‘bags for life’ at a cost of 10p to shoppers who do not bring their own. Sainsbury’s has been offering bags for life for 5p since the charging scheme for plastic bags came into force.

FoE campaigner Henry Chown said: ‘We’re delighted Tesco is replacing disposable bags with bags for life. We hope other retailers follow suit.’
