A rally to support the Taxes for Peace Bill, introduced by Quaker MP Ruth Cadbury, is to be held at Friends House at the end of February.

The Taxes for Peace Bill is the next step forward in fully recognising the human rights of conscientious objectors, according to the campaigning organisation Conscience. The legislation, if passed, would enable all citizens who identify as conscientious objectors to redirect the military portions of their taxes to nonviolent means of ensuring national security.

The Bill passed its first reading in the House of Commons. Although it was scheduled for debate on 2 December, parliament ran out of time and the debate was rescheduled for 24 March.

The rally at Friends House, held on the evening of Monday 27 February, will include a panel discussion with some leading peacemakers. Speakers will include Jonathan Cohen, executive director of Conciliation Resources, and Symon Hill, coordinator of the Peace Pledge Union.
