A nine-month long redevelopment of Taunton Meeting House will lead to ‘a model for how places of worship can be used,’ local Friends hope. The Meeting house closed earlier this week.

The renovation will include a newly built Meeting room opening onto a redesigned garden. Additional meeting rooms will be flexible, to allow for a range of uses. Two new flats will be built, one for a resident Quaker and the other to rent out. It is hoped that this rental revenue will allow the Meeting to keep its room hire charges down.

The redeveloped Meeting house will have a reduced carbon footprint. Environmentally friendly features will include state of the art insulation, underfloor heating, an air source heat pump, rainwater harvesting and photovoltaic roof panels.

Martin Wall, clerk to the redevelopment committee, told the Friend: ‘This is in all respects a sustainable project reflecting our belief in a sustainable future.’

Meetings for Worship will be held in a room at the Temple Methodist Church in Upper High Street for the duration of the closure.
