Tapestry on the road
The Quaker Tapestry will be seen at Chelmsford Cathedral next month
Panels from the Quaker Tapestry are once more on the road, with twenty of them destined for Chelmsford Cathedral next month.
The twenty panels will include those on conscientious objection, railways and Elizabeth Fry. A diary given by Elizabeth Fry to her niece will also be on show.
Nicholas Henshall, the dean of Chelmsford, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome the Quaker Tapestry. This extraordinary and fascinating work is an absorbing piece of history, remarkable artwork and a real story of faith. The Cathedral website calls it ‘a stitched masterpiece in story-telling’.
‘Here in Chelmsford we are rediscovering and celebrating our own history, particularly the long tradition of religious dissent across Essex, in which the Quakers have a big and proud role. I am looking forward to learning more about this history and what it means for us today,’ he added.
The exhibition will be opened on 20 August by the actor and Quaker Sheila Hancock.
