The Quaker Tapestry Museum has put out a call for wedding-day photographs and anecdotes from Quaker couples. The photographs are to be included in an upcoming exhibition, ‘Simplicity in Style: The Quaker wedding’, alongside a marriage panel in the Quaker Tapestry, a newly-finished same-sex marriage panel, and various historic Quaker wedding items.

Sally Gregson-Miller, museum assistant curatorial from the Quaker Tapestry Museum, told the Friend that the idea for the exhibition was sparked by a Quaker wedding dress in its collection. ‘The dress is a beautiful silk example of historic Quaker wedding style dating from the 1830s. It will be the centrepiece of the exhibition, accompanied by some examples from our collection of various historic Quaker marriage certificates. The dress, and the marriage certificates, exemplify the Quaker traditions of simplicity in style and inclusion (ie. the custom of getting all attendees to sign the marriage certificate).

‘We wanted to build on these historic artefacts by also including modern examples of Quaker wedding styles… Next to our 1830s wedding dress, the community submissions will hopefully highlight the continuing evolution and diversity of Quaker wedding styles.’

The images should show Friends in their wedding attire, and be accompanied with anecdotes of 200 words (maximum). The museum ‘enthusiastically’ welcomes all submissions, particularly from ‘traditionally underrepresented groups including, but not limited to, those who identify as LGBTQ+, deaf and/or disabled, neurodivergent, POC [people of colour] and ethnic minorities/global majority Quakers’, said Sally Gregson-Miller. ‘We hope to include all the stories we receive in the exhibition. However if there is a surplus of submissions, the remaining entries will go on our website.’
