Talking peace at Greenbelt

A Quaker presence will be in evidence at Greenbelt this year

by The Friend Newsdesk 24th August 2012

Peace, nonviolence and social justice will be high on the agenda of the Greenbelt Festival held at Cheltenham racecourse from 24 to 27 August.

The festival, which has attracted Friends for some years, has a strong list of contributors. John Dear, an American Jesuit, is speaking on the Gospel of Nonviolence. Ciaron O’Reilly and Ben Griffin of Veterans for Peace will focus on faith based nonviolent resistance and Giles Fraser talks about the Military Ethical Complex. Christian peace activists Chris Cole and Peter Lee will lead a panel discussion on drone technology – lethal force by remote control.

The effect of violent conflict on children and the importance of the transformative work of Christian peacemaking initiatives will also be highlighted. The Quaker Living Witness Project will have a sustainability and economic justice stall at this year’s festival.
