Bewdley Quakers joined more than eighty friends from Kidderminster for a fundraising supper last month.

The event on 21 April was held to raise money for Syrian refugees and local homeless people. Local Syrian people provided the entertainment.

Colin Billett, clerk of Bewdley Meeting and a member of Wyre Forest Refugee Group, which was set up to support Syrian refugees, told the Friend: ‘The supper was originally to raise money for the Unicef Syrian appeal, but then the refugees said that we should share half of it with homeless people through the Wyre Forest Night Stop, which we thought was a wonderful idea.’

Colin Billett said the supper included a selection of around thirty dishes, many of which were Syrian:  ‘There were kebabs, halal lamb, flatbreads and baba ganoush, for example.’

Tickets cost £10 each and food was provided by the group members and the refugees.

He added that the event spoke to his faith: ‘It’s about compassion and Quaker faith in action. I’m a Quaker because we believe we all are equal, and in compassion to all humanity.’
