Student sets up university Quaker society
A Friend has set up a new Quaker society at Exeter University
A Quaker Phd student from Exeter University who spoke on local radio about ‘the day’s papers from a Quaker perspective’ has launched a new Quaker society at Exeter University.
The society, called ‘QSoc’, was launched on 3 October with an ‘Introduction to Quakers (Q101)’ event, which included a panel of speakers.
Ghee Bowman told the Friend: ‘Setting up the society was a lengthy, bureaucratic process. We had to have a committee of three posts: treasurer, secretary and president.
‘I’m reasonably hopeful that we will have ten to twelve members, but we need some young people to come forward and take the lead. We did a lot of outreach in Freshers’ Week and the next thing we are going to do is sell white poppies at the university.’
Ghee Bowman, who has been a Friend for fifteen years, added that the society has ‘the potential to reinvigorate the local Exeter Meeting, where members are very active but mostly older than me’ and ‘bring another voice’ into the university’s multi-faith community.
He said: ‘I hope it will bring people together and help facilitate discussion.’
Ghee Bowman spoke to to BBC Radio Devon on 7 October as part of the Quaker Week celebrations.
