Stocksfield Friends display Fox400 tiles
Friends in Stocksfield have created a display of six framed Quaker Tapestry panels and tiles created in a summer tile-making day inspired by Fox400
Stocksfield Meeting celebrated George Fox’s 400th anniversary by showing off some new artistic projects.
The Northumbrian Friends held an exhibition on 27 September including window displays of six framed Quaker Tapestry panels and tiles created in a summer tile-making day inspired by Fox400. Michael Long, from the Meeting, told the Friend that Quaker artist Philippa Hodkinson led the afternoon of creativity on 2 August. ‘Four industrious Friends first created their designs on wet clay, trimmed to tile size. Philippa then took the rough tiles and began the colouring and firing process in her studio at her home in rural Northumberland. Some six weeks later, the tiles were finished and became part of the window display set up for the Meeting house’s Fox 400 exhibition.’
There was also an indoor display of six original and signed prints of Robert Spence etchings of Fox’s story, and two showings of the Quaker Tapestry and Swarthmoor Hall videos. The day was ‘a great success’, said Michael, with ‘a constant stream of visitors’. There were also ‘two “mini” Meetings for Worship (ten minutes each)’ and ‘lots of leaflets and badges’. This included a ‘brand new leaflet “Portrait of Stocksfield Quakers”’.
