A musical adaptation of Ian Serraillier’s much-loved children’s novel The Silver Sword has toured Britain.

The novel tells the story of four Polish children’s struggles in the immediate aftermath of the second world war. It was written in 1956 and named by The Times as one of the top fifty children’s books of all time.

The new musical version was adapted for the stage by Susie McKenna and Steve Edis. It was a co-production between Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre and the Sell a Door Theatre Company.

Ian Serraillier was a Quaker, a member of the Peace Pledge Union and a second world war conscientious objector. The Imperial War Museum holds a selection of his private papers, including a notebook containing his association with the Friends War Victims Relief Committee and the Friends Ambulance Unit.
