Spirit Level film
The Spirit Level is to be made into a film
Quakers have been urged to give a few pounds to make the case for equality in an innovative way. The Spirit Level, a book that shows ‘why more equal societies almost always do better’ was a surprise best-seller on its publication in 2009. Now its supporters want to make it into a film.
The film will be funded by ‘crowd-sourcing’ – a system by which thousands of supporters each give a small donation to make the project possible. Individual contributions could be as little £10.
‘There might be many Quakers with an interest in equality who would be happy to contribute,’ suggested Martin Wilkinson, the Quaker brother of Richard Wilkinson, who coauthored The Spirit Level with Kate Pickett.
The authors, who are both epidemiologists, have drawn on years of research to demonstrate that societies with greater economic equality have higher life expectancy, fewer cases of mental ill-health, greater levels of trust and a range of other social benefits.
