Social media platform rejects word ‘peace’

'I was shocked that the word “peace” seemed too political.’

Winchmore Hill Friends say they were inhibited from advertising an event on social media this month because the title highlighted the word ‘peace’.

Rupert Price, from Winchmore Hill Meeting, told the Friend that, when he tried to type in the word to advertise their open afternoon on 15 March, the words were rejected by Meta. ‘It just told me that the word violated community standards. I managed to get it in by hiding the word in a sentence, but I was shocked that the word “peace” seemed too political.’

Mark Friend, from Winchmore Hill Meeting, said that the incident highlighted the limits of social media marketing. ‘We thought we’d go back to more traditional methods of communication when advertising our open day this month.’

The open afternoon from 3:30pm celebrates the history of Quakerism, Friends today, and ‘the amazing fact of Quaker worship’. Bob Newsom, from the Meeting, said that the event had partly been inspired by the fact that Winchmore Hill Friends did not hold an event to mark George Fox’s 400th birthday last year. Friends have been worshipping at the site since 1688.

We could all (those of us on FB) post messages over the next week or so using the word peace to see what happens.
