There are a lot of twists and turns on the country roads leading to Charney Manor, but they are well worth the ride, and the destination was the location for what was to be a very rewarding experience.

‘Signposts for the Soul’ was a new initiative of Quaker Action on Alcohol and Drugs (QAAD). Usually its trustees, exclusively, meet around this time of year to plan the next biennial conference. This time the weekend at Charney Manor had two unusual characteristics: it had been decided to open it to Quakers and visitors who had an interest in the subject of addictions. The goal was to get out-of-the-box new suggestions; and the new director of QAAD, Alison Mather, was introduced.
