Shed man recognised
A Friend who founded the UK Men's Sheds Association has been recognised with an award
The Friend who founded the UK Men’s Sheds Association has been named a ‘point of light’ by prime minister David Cameron.
Mike Jenn of Friends House Meeting established the first community Men’s Shed in the UK in 2011 as a place for retired older men to make friends and share tools and resources for both individual and community projects.
He then set up the association, which raises awareness and offers practical support for others interested in setting up Men’s Sheds. Today there are 262 across the UK serving 5,240 members, with a further ninety-seven sheds in development.
Sheds are friendly and inclusive places where men can come together around practical tasks to achieve a sense of purpose, achievement and social interaction.
The point of light awards recognise outstanding individuals in the voluntary sector.
