The roof at Settle Meeting House has been replaced

by Tara Craig 5th June 2015

The roof of Settle Meeting House has been stripped, repaired and replaced.

Settle Meeting treasurer John Asher told the Friend that ‘while the Meeting house cost just £80 to build in 1678, the 2015 repair bill for the roof alone will be some £30,000’.

The Meeting house is a Grade II* listed building and the oldest place of worship in Settle. Its stone roof slates are thick and uneven, John explained, and have required regular attention since the building’s earliest days.

I feel deeply thankful to Friends in Settle for the loving and tender care which they have given to this historic Meeting House.

So many meetings have allowed ancient Quaker meeting houses to slip away from them. Here in Scotland (so I have heard) there remains only one meeting house built to be a meeting house and still in use. The others are all gone, every one. These old meeting houses are the footprints of Quaker life. When they go they seem to take with them much of the authentic spirit of the Society.

This is very happy news
