Scammers target Friends
Scammers target Quaker networks
Quakers have been targeted by scammers posing as Friends in need of money. The callers are making use of names and numbers available on Britain and Australia Yearly Meeting websites in their approaches.
Susan Addison, secretary of Australia Yearly Meeting, was contacted by ‘a caller purporting to be stranded at an airport in the Philippines’. The caller then used the name of a British Friend and claimed to have been given Susan’s name by ‘Quackers’ in Britain. She adds: ‘The names and phone numbers of several Britain Yearly Meeting employees were provided as people who could vouch for his story.’
Previously confined to Australia, the scam has now spread to Canada’s British Columbia Interior.
