Samuel Bowly archives donated to history hub

The archive comprises original editions of the local newspapers containing accounts of his eightieth birthday, his obituary and accounts of his funeral.

The family archives of a leading Quaker abolitionist have been donated to the Gloucester Heritage Hub. Samuel Bowly was also a leader in the temperance movement and is portrayed in Benjamin Robert Haydon’s painting The Anti-Slavery Convention 1840.
