There has been a mixed reaction from equality campaigners.  Equalities minister Lynne Featherstone said that a consultation on the subject – delayed from this year – will begin in spring 2012. ‘To deny one group of people the same opportunities available to another is not simply discriminatory, she said, ‘It is simply not fair.’

Lynne Featherstone has ruled out giving legal recognition to religious same-sex marriages.

The announcement received a critical reaction from Equal Love, a campaign for marriage equality. The UK government has promised that a law allowing religious elements in same-sex civil partnerships will be implemented in England and Wales by January.
