A prestigious international prize for innovative philanthropy has been awarded to the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT).  The prize was given in Belfast on 8 June at the twenty-third Annual General Assembly and Conference of the European Foundation Centre entitled ‘Peace Through Social Justice – a Role for Foundations’.

The Raymond Georis Prize for Innovative Philanthropy was received by Stephen Pittam on behalf of JRCT.

Jane Francis, director of policy development for the Mercator Fund, said: ‘The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust’s work to generate peace, political equality and social justice exemplifies the contribution that philanthropy and civil society can play in shaping the social and political landscape.’

JRCT ‘was chosen in part to recognise its work as an organisation that is at the cutting edge of difficult issues. An organisation which aims to get to the root of a problem and remove it – not just make it easier to live with,’ said Jane Francis.

The prize is sponsored by the Mercator Fund.
