Theresa May appealing against Roseline Akhalu court ruling

by Symon Hill 18th January 2013

The home secretary has said she will push ahead with attempts to deport a Nigerian with life-threatening kidney disease. Human rights groups have reacted with dismay to Theresa May’s decision to appeal against a court ruling that Roseline Akhalu should be allowed to remain in the UK.

Roseline entered Britain legally in 2004 and studied as a postgraduate at Leeds University before becoming ill. Doctors warned that she would be dead within weeks if returned to Nigeria as the medication she needs would be too expensive for her.

Quakers are among those involved in the campaign against her deportation, along with her local MP Greg Mulholland (see ‘Home Office set to deport transplant patient to Nigeria’, 9 November 2012). He accused the government of ‘wasting taxpayers’ money seeking deportation in a case that is so obviously wrong and is causing undue stress for an already ill woman.’

Roseline’s lawyer Tessa Gregory said she believed that Theresa May would lose her appeal.
