Noël Staples reflects on the ‘beating heart of what it is to be a Quaker’

‘Noël’s experiences seem to be profoundly mystical and extremely valuable for us all. According to the historical records of the great mystical figures from the past, mystical experience is arrived at after massive effort of heart, mind and will. Noël seems to find it very easy. So I am curious.’  Peter Hancock wrote these words about me after reading my two short articles published last year in the Friend (31 August and 5 October). Since then we have had quite a correspondence about mysticism. Peter, who is a physicist, has written on subjects such as ‘Physics and Mysticism’ (17 August 2012, the Friend).  What caught my attention were Peter’s words that ‘Noël seems to find it very easy’. That Noël most certainly doesn’t. Somehow or other I seem to have found my way into a profound relationship with the spirit.
