New report warns of the serious implications of mining expansion in Colombia

by The Friend Newsdesk 16th November 2012

Plans for a massive expansion of Colombia’s mining industry could have serious implications for human rights violations, environmental damage and lost tax revenues, a new report warns.

Giving It Away: The Consequences of an Unsustainable Policy in Colombia has been supported by Christian Aid and warns British companies, who are key investors in the country’s oil and mineral wealth, that they face major challenges if they wish to be seen to be investing responsibly.

The Friend, in 24 June 2011, published an in-depth Fox Report that investigated the human and environmental cost of some of the mining activity in South America being done by multi-national companies.

Colombia supplies fifty-five per cent of the world’s emeralds, as well as being a significant source of gold, silver and platinum and a leading coal producer.

The report states:  ‘Colombia risks giving its natural resources away at immense social, environmental and human rights cost’.
