The Quaker Lesbian and Gay Fellowship in the midst of a re-evaluation

Reinventing QLGF

The Quaker Lesbian and Gay Fellowship in the midst of a re-evaluation

At the recent Spring gathering of the Quaker Lesbian and Gay Fellowship (QLGF) Michael Hutchinson challenged members to focus on the future without forgetting the past.

This year QLGF is celebrating its fortieth anniversary and is in the midst of a re-evaluation. Michael reminded the team of some of the more colourful characters in the Fellowship’s past and helped members to focus on some key principles. He stressed, firstly, that QLGF is a profoundly Quaker organisation. Whatever else, he said, the Fellowship has its roots deep within the Religious Society of Friends and needs to maintain and strengthen these by catering, primarily, to the spiritual needs of the members.

Michael also highlighted that QLGF is not a campaigning organisation, but a safe place where people can come and be themselves, refreshed through worship with like-minded people. The gathering was reminded that QLGF needs to raise awareness that it is not restricted to those gays and lesbians who are referenced in the group’s name, but to all people struggling with sexual or gender identity related issues – just as it is open to all spiritually-seeking people and not restricted to members of Quaker Meetings.
